State Senator Kathleen Vinehout still mulling run for governor

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - State Senate Democrat Kathleen Vinehout says she's still thinking about running for governor, after Mary Burke announced her bid Monday morning.

Burke, a former state commerce secretary and Trek Bicycle executive, was the choice of a number of party insiders who were hoping there wouldn't be a primary.

Vinehout says she's been talking with voters, and many believe they should have a say on choosing the Democrat to go up against Republican Scott Walker.

Vinehout, who represents part of far western Wisconsin in the Senate, says some good ideas could come out of a primary.

Some Democrats are said to be concerned that the party's nominee won't have nearly enough money at the end of the primary next August to stage a credible campaign against the well-funded Walker.

The governor's camp raised about $3.5 million in the first half of this year.

Vinehout ran in last year's Democratic recall primary for governor. She says Wisconsin needs a female chief executive, and she wishes Burke the best.
