State's waterfowl hunt re-opens this weekend

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin's waterfowl hunt re-opens this weekend -- and the state DNR says waterways in the Upper Mississippi National Fish and Wildlife Refuge will be open.

Hunters will have to use state or private boat landings to get to the water, because federal access points are closed due to the shutdown in Washington.

The state's chief DNR warden, Randy Stark, says it's basically business as usual for waterfowl hunters. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service doesn't agree.

Assistant regional director Chuck Traxler says his agency is looking for an interpretation about whether the waters within the Mississippi refuge can be used at all. He expects an answer by the weekend, but he added, "Ultimately, we hope that we're open on Saturday" -- which would mean the shutdown would be over.

It's starting its second week Tuesday.
