HOULTON, WI (WTAQ) - The Stillwater Lift Bridge at the Minnesota-Wisconsin border has ended its normal lift schedule for the year.
The bridge will stay in the down position until next spring, unless boaters ask 24 hours in advance that the bridge be lifted. The scheduled lifts ended Tuesday for the season.
The 80-year-old lift bridge carries traffic from Houlton in northwest Wisconsin to Stillwater Minnesota across the St. Croix River.
A new four-lane bridge is being built to handle the motor vehicles, and it's due to open in 2016. The lift bridge will continue to be used for bicycles and pedestrians.
