MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - The federal lawsuit against Wisconsin’s voter ID law might get dismissed for an unusual reason.

State officials say the only plaintiff with standing in this case died. She was Bettye Jones, a black woman with no birth certificate. Jones’ suit claimed the law was biased against blacks and latinos.

The state says with Jones gone, none of the remaining plaintiffs have the standing to sue. Jones’ lawyer is Charles Curtis. He disagrees and says the other plaintiffs have sufficient standing in the case to proceed.

Wisconsin’s voter ID law is on the books, but held up by two federal court challenges and by a challenge by a Dane County judge.
