Suspensions Handed Out Over Bench-Clearing Brawl

MILWAUKEE, WI (WHBL) - The Brewers say Pittsburgh Pirates' starter Gerrit Cole should have gotten suspended, joining two players on each team who were punished in the wake of their bench-clearing brawl on Sunday.  Brewers' manager Ron Roenicke said the suspensions were not fair because, "The guy who started it all got nothing."  He said Brewers' G-M Doug Melvin feels the same way.  Milwaukee catcher Martin Maldonado was given a five-game suspension by Major League Baseball for punching Pittsburgh's Travis Snider, who got two games.  Brewers' outfielder Carlos Gomez, who tripled and then swung his helmet after Cole had words with him, got three games.  Pirates' catcher Russell Martin was suspended one game.  All four were fined undisclosed amounts.  E-S-P-N said Maldonado was fined 25-hundred dollars.  All the involved players - except Maldonado - appealed their punishments, so they're still playing for now.  Gomez said his suspension was unfair, and all he did was respond to Cole and others who were screaming at him.  Maldonado accepted his suspension.  Jonathan Lucroy will be catching for the next five games, with an off-day on Thursday. Utility player Elian Herrera will be the backup catcher if needed.
