SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The Sheboygan Fire Department and Sheboygan Water Utility are asking city residents to clear away snow from fire hydrants.
Assistant Fire Chief Vernon Koch said the department is currently going through training, limiting their opportunities to clear away snow from hydrants, which total over 2,000 in the City of Sheboygan. Koch said if a fire hydrant is snow covered, they will need to take time to find it using a map, then have their own men shovel it out - wasting minutes and seconds that would otherwise be used to put out a fire in progress.
It is recommended that snow within a three feet radius of a hydrant be removed so firefighters can use equipment properly. Residents are asked to assist those who cannot physically clear snow from a hydrant in front of their residence.
