Jennifer Nettles Takes a Leap of Faith with Debut Solo Album, "That Girl"

Jennifer Nettles found multi-platinum success as the lead singer of country duo Sugarland , but now she's stepping out on her own with a solo project, That Girl , in stores Tuesday. Jennifer's decision to go it alone coincides with the birth of her son, Magnus , in late 2012. She credits motherhood with helping her make the leap into a solo career.

Jennifer says, "I think over the four years of writing for this album, both the writing in and of itself and also just the life in and of itself that can happen in four-years time, it really inspired a lot of self-trust, and it inspired me to trust myself as a songwriter and to trust myself as a singer."

Of course, having co-writers like Sara Bareilles , Richard Marx and Little Big Town 's Phillip Sweet on the new album made it easier for Jennifer to open herself up creatively. The album's producer, Rick Rubin -- who is known for his work with Jay Z , Johnny Cash and Adele -- also encouraged Nettles to experiment with her sound.

"I really didn't put any boundaries on myself on how I wanted to write," Jennifer explains. "I just let that happen, and I didn't know what direction it was going to go, and I sat down at my piano, and I called old friends, and I made new friends, and all those things just to see from a writing perspective what would come together, and what kind of collection I would make"

Jennifer closes the project with a feminine take on the Bob Seger classic "Like a Rock." She'll launch her That Girl tour in Washington, D.C. on Valentine's Day.
