SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - A candidate forum set for next week for those running in the 6th district House seat Republican primary will only feature half the people on the ballot. The League of Women Voters of Ozaukee County said Wednesday they will continue with their event on Monday after Joe Leibham and Glenn Grothman said Tuesday they would not take part.
Both Leibham and Grothman said this is due to the state League of Women Voter’s group challenging Wisconsin’s Voter ID law in court. Leibham said he will not take part in any future event involving a group that is “actively misrepresenting Voter ID reform”. Grothman said it is not necessary to take part in events organized by a group against conservative principles of election integrity.
The Ozaukee County LWV group says primary candidates Duey Stroebel and Tom Denow will be at the forum to provide people a chance to learn where they stand on various issues.
Below is the official statement from LWV Ozaukee County President Donna Fowler:
We are disappointed that Senators Leibham and Grothman have decided not to participate in the League of Women Voters-Ozaukee County candidate forum on July 14.Forums provide the candidates the opportunity to state their qualifications and their positions on issues. Questions from the audience let the candidates learn what issues are important to the people they want to represent. The League's sole purpose in conducting forums is to educate voters. The forum will go forward as scheduled with candidates Duey Stroebel of Cedarburg and Tom Denow of Oshkosh. They will be responding to written questions from the audience.
