Sheboygan Police to do vehicle courtesy checks to prevent break ins

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - If you park your vehicle in a public area in Sheboygan, you may soon be seeing a card on it, letting you know if it may be susceptible to a break in.  Sheboygan Police will be teaming up with their youth Law Enforcement Explorers in starting a “Vehicle Courtesy Check” program later this month.

Sgt. Kurt Zempel says the city had more than 150 thefts or attempted thefts from vehicles last year, many of which could have been prevented if owners had done a better job making their vehicles less attractive to criminals.  The program will have Explorers members working with neighborhood officers during evening hours, checking vehicles parked on streets and public parking lots and leaving courtesy cards that tell them if they had unlocked doors, open windows, or keys and/or valuables left out in the open.

Zempel adds all cards will be based on observations without attempting to enter, and officers will try to contact vehicle owners that fail a check to let them know how they can help reduce crime by making their vehicle more resistant to crimes.
