MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - UW-Madison Police are seeking 84 criminal charges against a former university hospital nurse suspected of stealing morphine.

A 31-year-old Cottage Grove woman was arrested Thursday. Police said she apparently stole painkillers that were supposed to be given to patients in 42 separate instances.

For each instance, police are seeking a felony count of illegal drug diversion, and a charge of reckless injury.

UW Hospital officials reportedly learned about the thefts after seeing that evidence caps on syringes had been tampered with.

UW Police said they're not sure how many actual patients had drugs missing.
