Portage County clerk met by protesters demanding gay marriage licenses

STEVENS POINT, WI (WTAQ) - One of the last remaining Wisconsin county clerks not to issue same-sex marriage licenses was met with protesters Friday morning.

About 30 people showed up at the Portage County Courthouse in Stevens Point. WAOW-TV said a few people in the group carried signs, and one read, "Equality for all -- not the chosen few."

About five of every six Wisconsin counties have been handing out marriage licenses to gay couples, after Federal Judge Barbara Crabb ruled a week ago that the state's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. But Crabb did not tell counties what to do in the wake of her ruling.

Portage County Clerk Shirley Simonis said it's been very difficult trying to decipher things -- but personally, she wants everyone to be treated equally. Some clarity might be on the way Friday afternoon.

Judge Crabb is scheduled to hold a hearing in Madison on the ACLU's request to allow gay marriages everywhere in Wisconsin, and to have the state recognize same-sex unions in other states.

The state opposes both, and is still pushing to have the gay marriage ban reinstated while it's challenged in the higher courts.
