SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Alliant Energy broke ground Monday on a new air quality control project at the Edgewater Power Plant in Sheboygan.  Project Manager Tim Kreft said the $300 million project will add a dry scrubber and bag house system to one of the plant’s coal burning units.  When completed, the system will capture over 90 percent of sulfur dioxide emissions made.

Public Service Commission of Wisconsin Commissioner Ellen Nowak said she is happy to see Alliant continue to invest in coal and keep the plant in operation amid tougher air quality standards, adding this project can be seen as an example of how other states in the country can address issues when considering what to do with coal fire plants.

The project will bring up to 300 jobs to the area and be completed by the spring of 2017.
