Live look at the universe hearing about a new ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’:

This morning we played a round of ‘get irrationally angry about something that doesn’t matter for 30 seconds.’ Title needs work, I’ll grant you. But this was the subject: Kevin Hart and Will Smith to star in a remake of one of the all time movie classics, ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles.’ Look, I like Will Smith and Kevin Hart. I really do! I think Kevin Hart’s stand-up is hilarious, his Netflix show was solid and his movies are……and his stand-up is hilarious! And Will Smith, I grew up on Will Smith. Fresh Prince, the Bad Boys franchise, Men In Black, Independence Day, hell I even enjoyed Wild Wild West if we’re in the trust tree.
But this? Nope. Nope nope nope. I understand that Hollywood has been on a nostalgia binge for a while now, I understand that these remakes almost always make money, and this one probably will too, but I just can’t have it. This is like trying to remake ‘Blazing Saddles’ or ‘Airplane!’ No reason for it.
All of that said, nobody has a gun to my head. I won’t see this movie but I’m sure thousands of people will and a lot of them will enjoy it. Some won’t even know that it is a remake. And as long as we’re keeping a list of those people for future reference, I’m fine with all of it.
One of the greatest scenes in cinematic history:
PS: After we discussed this on the morning show, we started down a path of the rare remake that are as good, or better than, the original. Only a few came to my mind: Ocean’s Eleven and True Grit. I’ve seen the original Ocean’s movies with Frank Sinatra, maybe they’re just too old and don’t translate well to someone my age, but I think the Clooney/Pitt versions are better. And I know True Grit will be fighting words for some, but I thought the 2010 Jeff Bridges version was on par with the original. We had a texter say that the Footloose remake was solid and the Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga version of A Star is Born was on point as well.
