A four-lane highway between Sheboygan and Fond du Lac has been a goal of many for nearly five decades, and opposed by others nearly as long. But at least for the Sheboygan County portion the dream becomes reality in just two more months.
Plans for the freeway date back to 1972, but the project got only as far as Plymouth before stalling in the 1980s under repeated legal challenges. The latest phase was finally approved and construction on the nearly $26 million stretch westward to the county line began in May last year. The Wisconsin DOT now says that preparations are underway to open the new pavement in Sheboygan County within a week or two, while the finishing touches will take until June 30th to complete.
That’s not the end of the efforts, though, as further west in Fond du Lac County it will take until late October to reach the outskirts of the city of Fond du Lac, and another year until it finishes at Highway 151.
