Sheboygan is one of five U.S. cities that has been awarded a $20,000 “Better Cities for Pets” grant. The program is an initiative of Mars Petcare, a major pet food and health products corportation.
The other four cities selected from the 2021 applicants to the competitive grant program were Las Vegas, Nevada; Dallas, Texas; Key West, Florida and Oakland, California.
Sheboygan’s Pet-Friendly Task Force applied for the program with the focus on increasing the number of outdoor recreation options for people and their pets in parks and other public spaces.
Grant funds will be used to provide signage for all 36 Sheboygan parks, informing visitors whether or not pets are welcome. All pet-friendly parks will each be outfitted with waste stations, two of them will have pet water fountains installed, and a page on the City’s website will be dedicated to serve as a hub for pet-related information and resources.
Remaining funds will be used to support the Humane Society of Sheboygan County’s new 3-1/2 acre dog park.
