Sheboygan County could be in for enough rain today to erase the deficit of moisture for the year so far. The National Weather Service says that those rains could fall fast enough, though, to cause problems.
A flood watch is in effect for an area of southeast Wisconsin that includes Sheboygan County until 11 tonight. The concern center around the chance that rain could fall at rates of over an inch per hour at times, with the potential to cause ponding on roadways and standing water in areas with poor drainage. The highest potential for those heavy rains will be this afternoon and evening.
The good news, though, is that this system could erase shortfalls that have kept us in a moderate to severe drought much of this year. The Airport has so far recorded just over an inch-and-a-half of rain during August, an eight of an inch more than expected by this point in the month, but for the year-to-date we’re two inches short of normal totals of 18.92 inches. However with totals today expected to exceed two inches, we may end up on the plus side for the first time since April.
