The Wisconsin Department of Justice will investigate the details of an incident that led to the death of a suspect on Thursday.
The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office says that deputies attempted a traffic stop of an individual wanted on outstanding felony warrants when the subject fled, leading to a chase. Deputies set up stop sticks which forced the vehicle to stop on Lakefield Road in the Town of Grafton east of I-43. The subject ran into a treeline and reportedly displayed a weapon, prompting an Ozaukee County Sheriff’s deputy to shoot the subject. Despite lifesaving efforts the person died on the scene and a firearm was recovered.
Per department policy the deputy who fired their weapon was put on administrative leave and the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is coordinating with the Wisconsin Crime Lab to review evidence and determine facts of the incident. Sheriff Christy Knowles said that body cameras were being worn at the time.
