Sheboygan area unemployment trends largely tracked those seen across Wisconsin during October according to statistics released on Wednesday by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.
The Sheboygan Metropolitan area’s labor force was static since September at 63,000, and up by 500 over last year. The area unemployment rate was 2.6% in October, down from 2.8% in September, but up from 2.3% during October of 2022.
The City of Sheboygan saw the October 2023 Unemployment rate fall from September’s 3.2% to October’s 2.9%. That compares with a 2.5% level last year, and sustains Sheboygan’s ranking at 13th best among the 35 largest Wisconsin Cities.
For Sheboygan County, October’s 2.6% rate was a drop of two-tenths from September, and a rise of three-tenths compared with October of 2022. Sheboygan County ranked as the 10th best unemployment rate among Wisconsin’s 72 counties in October, down one notch from September’s ranking.

Preliminary October unemployment rates declined in all 12 Wisconsin metro areas over the month, while those rates increased in all 12 areas over the past year.
33 of Wisconsin’s 35 largest cities saw rates decline compared to September, and the remaining two cities were unchanged over the same time. Compared with 2022, rates increased in 33 of 35 cities and remained unchanged in two.
As for Wisconsin’s 72 counties, 71 saw decreases in the preliminary October Unemployment data and unchanged in the single remaining county. 4 counties saw no change over the year, while increases were seen in the other 68.
