Not many states accept the excuse of “Gone Hunting” when accounting for students missing from classrooms, but it happens in Wisconsin. The 9-day Gun Deer Season is a family ritual for many, and it begins Saturday morning.
Forecasts from the Wisconsin DNR are optimistic for a good harvest in the Northeast District, which includes both Sheboygan and Fond du Lac Counties on the southern border. For the second year in a row a mild winter set the stage for high survival and reproduction rates. While habitat here is more fragmented due to agriculture, high numbers of deer are present. Last year, Sheboygan County yielded 883 antlered and 1,027 antlerless deer for a total of 1,910 deer taken, an overall increase of 4.7% over 2023.
One figure the DNR and hunting families hope to repeat from last year is that of safety – it was the safest hunt on record with just one non-fatal shooting incident during the 9-day hunt.
