Pigeon River Elementary School has become the latest in the Sheboygan Area School District to exceed 5% of the student population with active COVID-19 cases, triggering a mandatory masking measure.
The threshold was exceeded on Thursday when 12 of the 236 students tested positive for a coronavirus infection, placing that percentage at 5.08%. Thursday’s data became available on Friday, and a message was then sent to parents. Per a policy passed in October by the School Board, masks will now be required for all students, staff, and visitors to that school beginning Saturday, December 4 for at least the next 7 calendar days. According to Nicole Sondalle, Marketing & Communications Coordinator for the Sheboygan Area School District, masking will be optional when students return to school on Monday, December 13th. That assumes that the percent of students with COVID-19 falls below 5%. If not, Sondalle said that Pigeon River families would receive a message about an extension of the masking requirement.
Pigeon River’s campus on North 21st Street also hosts the Etude Elementary School, the first to undergo mandatory masking. Their 7-day period ended over the Thanksgiving weekend and masking became optional this past Monday. Etude now has only 3 active cases, amounting to 1.71% of the student population.
