The first snap of the third quarter against the Vikings on Sunday was the last snap of the year for safety Raven Greene. The second year player got caught in a pile and suffered a bad ankle injury. He had to be carted off the field.
On Monday, the Packers placed Greene on season ending injured reserve with surgery to repair the damage scheduled.
The undrafted free agent worked his way into the regular rotation with a strong training camp, becomming the extra safety dropping into the box for run support. His play all but forced former second round pick Josh Jones to become expendable. Greene saw significant action in the first six quarters of the season.
Against Minnesota, Adrian Amos moved closer to the line of scrimmage and Will Redmond took over the deep safety position. It will be interesting to see if that continues or whether the Packers might not deploy veteran defensive back Tramon Williams at the back end of the secondary.
To take Greene’s spot on the roster, the Packers have claimed defensive back Tremon Smith off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs. The 6-0, 190 pound corner was a 6th round pick of the Chiefs in 2018 out of Central Arkansas. He saw limited playing time in 14 games last year and was waived after Kansas City’s opening game this season.
