GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — A crowd of over 78,100 took in the first ever soccer match at Lambeau Field on Saturday, despite two lightning delays and a steady downpour throughout much of the game.
England’s Manchester City topped Germany’s FC Bayern Munich 1-0 on a 12th-minute goal from Erling Haaland, which was immediately followed by a lightning delay as storms passed through just south of the stadium.
It was the second such delay of the match, sending the sellout crowd scrambling for the concourse. Following the restart, it was announced that the match would be shortened from 90 minutes to 80 with a brief 5-minute break at the 40-minute mark.
Both teams’ travel itineraries back to Europe factored into the decision, along with the weather situation.
All told the weather delays halted action for about 70 minutes.
According to the Packers tickets for the game were sold from all 50 US States along with the District of Columbia and two territories. Global fans from more than a dozen countries also took in the fixture, including traveling supporters of both clubs.
