With a global appeal and intense competition of some of the world’s fastest watercraft set to take place offshore of Sheboygan, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has enacted temporary flight restrictions over parts of the City of Sheboygan.
The move was by request of public safety officials, and will consist of a “No-Fly Zone”, encompassing a 2-nautical mile radius from the Sheboygan Harbor. The TFR is limited to Unmanned Aircraft Systems, or drones, flying between ground level and 1000 feet above ground level. Only drones that have obtained a waiver from the FAA are allowed to operate in the TFR. The restrictions will be in effect daily from 9:00 AM until 5:30 PM now through Sunday.
The announcement from the Sheboygan Police Department noted that in order for vessels to race, a rescue helicopter needs to be airborne over the racecourse. In years past, private drones have delayed the races and posed a risk to flight crews, race personnel, and the public.
Drone operators that fail to comply with the TFR may be subject to seizure of their drone and referral to federal authorities.
