The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new scam now making the rounds in area mail boxes.
According to officials, the new scam involves letters claiming to be from the IRS, warning that the target’s income tax refund cannot be deposited directly into their account. The letters continue by asking for the would-be victim’s updated bank account information. In some cases, a QR code is provided that directs the victim to a website to enter personal details.
Officials remind you that, despite these letters appearing very official, the IRS will never contact you in this matter. If you have any questions about your refund, visit IRS.gov. And of course, never give out your personal information.
