An extended period of hot weather will set in today, and the oppressive conditions may stick around Sheboygan County for the entire week. And, unfortunately, high surf on Lake Michigan will be dangerous for anyone hoping to cool off in the 60º water.
A high surf warning is in effect now through this evening for life-threatening waves of 4-6 feet, and those will be accompanied by dangerous currents – especially near break walls and other structures. The National Weather Service advises people to stay out of the water until conditions improve.
Meanwhile, those 60º waters will make the heat wave more tolerable within a mile or so of the shore where temperatures should peak in the mid 80s. Anyone further inland can expect low 90s today with the highest heat index readings hitting between 100 and 105 degrees by late morning, and an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from noon today until 7 PM Tuesday.

Lows in the 70s overnight offer little relief, and similar conditions are expected to last through at least Thursday if not into Friday, and they could stick around for the Independence Holiday weekend.
