The Sheboygan Common Council on Monday evening passed a moratorium on issuing zoning and building permits for data centers with more than 10,000 square feet.
The moratorium was established to give the council time to update the city’s zoning codes, as there are none for this type of use on the city’s records. The passage was not without question, as council members wondered if the moratorium provided ways for data centers to pop up by working around the city’s framework.
The measure eventually passed unanimously. The moratorium is in effect for 12 months.
