EMD Electronics, the North America electronics business division of the Germany-based Merck corporation, has opened a new, 38,000 square-foot facility in Sheboygan Falls. The new establishment, located on Merck’s Millipore Sigma campus on County Highway V, provides dedicated capabilities for synthesis, scale-up and technology transfer in the development of advanced materials for next-generation semiconductor manufacturing. A release from EMD said that the work that will be done here is critical to chip performance and scalability and will help EMD work more closely with customers to accelerate new materials.
The opening on Friday was attended by Governor Evers along with John Miller, secretary and CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, who said that the new R&D facility “brings advanced research and development capabilities to our state, creates opportunities for highly skilled jobs, and strengthens Wisconsin’s position as a place where global companies can develop and scale technologies of the future.”
The new facility introduces eight purpose-built laboratories supporting the product development lifecycle, including discovery, development, qualification, analytical development, purification, packaging and hazard testing to EMD Electronics’ global footprint. As part of an overall $200 million investment in the US by EMD, the Sheboygan Falls facility was designed for expansion, the first installment of which is expected to be completed next year.
