Graupel might not be a familiar term, but that’s what you call those pellets of frozen something that fell over the area on this first day of May. It’s not unusual per se, but on May 1st? But wait – there’s more!
All levity aside, cold weather is entrenched for the next 24 hours and that graupel will give way to likely freezing temperatures overnight, and a Freeze Warning is in effect for Sheboygan and all surrounding counties from midnight tonight until 8 AM Saturday. Any early vegetation could be harmed in temperatures as low as 29 degrees tonight, and the National Weather Service is also advising people to protect outdoor plumbing that’s exposed to sub-freezing temperatures.
Saturday will remain unusually cold with temperatures struggling to break 50 degrees, but highs should reach increasingly into the 60s on both Sunday and Monday before sliding down towards mid week.
