Wednesday’s severe thunderstorms were not as hard on Sheboygan County as they were elsewhere, but there was plenty of damage to report.
A home in the 1300 block of South 9th Street in Sheboygan was apparently struck by lightning around 4:00 Wednesday afternoon. The Sheboygan Fire Department responded within three minutes, greeted by smoke and flame coming from the turret roof of the building, which was unoccupied at the time. The fire was promptly extinguished and limited to the turret roof. Damage is estimated at $8,000.
Sheboygan County Emergency Management Director Steve Steinhardt reported a steady stream of calls coming in for downed trees and power lines down across mostly the northern half of Sheboygan County after storms moved through.
Among those reports, many from social media: County Highway T near County U had large branches in the roadway; a tree was struck by lightning and set afire near Elkhart Lake on Snake Road; trees and power lines were downed on Washington Street in Greenbush…on North West Street in Elkhart Lake, and at CTH SS and I in Sherman Center.
