A decline of 25 percent in the supply of blood and related products during June has resulted in the declaration of an emergency by the American Red Cross. The organization says that blood donors are urgently needed to give now in order to ensure that patients receive lifesaving medical care without delay. The shortage is especially serious for platelets and types O-positive and B-negative blood.
Donations began a steep decline near the end of May, while at the same time the demand for blood at hospitals rose nearly 3,500 units per week higher than normal, resulting in the plea for immediate donations.
The Red Cross said the best way to schedule is through the Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
