With e-bikes becoming more popular, the Sheboygan Police Department is reminding residents that not all e-bikes are created equal. The SPD says class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes are legal, and they have the same rights and privileges as a regular bicycle.
If an e-bike doesn’t have functioning pedals it is not legal. These are referred to as e-motos and are illegal to ride on roads and sidewalks. Also, if your e-bike has an electric motor greater than 750 watts, it is not legal.
Riders of illegal e-bikes and e-motos face increased forfeitures for driving on streets or sidewalks. Driver license restrictions apply to these vehicles. If you don’t have a license, or have a suspended or revoked license, you are subject to citation or arrest. Because illegal e-bikes are considered motor vehicles, you cannot ride one on a public road or sidewalk if you are under the influence of alcohol or a restricted controlled substance.
