A “Battle of the Bands” is a tradition in Sheboygan that dates back some six decades at the least. While its nature has taken several forms, the battle continues with the latest iteration thanks to Sheboygan’s 3 Sheeps Brewery. The brewery’s celebration of Les Paul – the “Wizard of Waukesha” – took form as 3 Sheeps’ first statewide Battle of the Bands.
More than 60 bands submitted entries, and those were narrowed down to four finalists: Gold Steps, Secret Menu, David Paul Martin, and The Racing Pulses. Competition took place on the 3 Sheeps Taproom stage on August 15, and a unanimous vote chose “Secret Menu” of Milwaukee as the winner. The grand prize sends Secret Menu to Hollywood for a four-hour session at the Les Paul Recording Studio with a professional recording engineer. Also included in the package is a $3,500 travel stipend, and the band has one year to redeem it.

614 people also entered to win a Gibson Les Paul electric guitar valued at $2,799. A series of “Dungeons and Dragons” dice rolls eventually determined the winner because, according to 3 Sheeps founder Grant Pauly, a simple pick-from-the-hat would have been “far too simple and anticlimactic.” The winner was an unnamed Sheboygan resident.

As a finale to the event, 3 Sheeps Brewing will make a donation to the Waukesha-based Les Paul Foundation in honor of the Wisconsin icon who inspired it all.
