It’s “that time of year” again when thoughts of love are top-of-mind among deer that wander onto roadways, and the Sheboygan County Emergency Communications Center has some advice for drivers that may hit them.
The agency that dispatches responders to handle such incidents says that besides the some 208 car vs. deer calls so far this year, they’ve also responded to collisions with 1 raccoon and 1 coyote.
World Animal Road Accident Awareness Day was this past Saturday, and in case that slipped by unnoticed, we can pass along some advice from the County Dispatchers, who say that you only need to make a report if you have $1,000 or more in vehicle damage. If you do injure a deer, don’t try to move it. And even if you can drive away, if the deer is still in the roadway, call 911 so someone can be sent to move it. Then, stay on the scene until an officer gets to you, but do move your vehicle from traffic if you can.
Finally, if you don’t have time to report the accident right away, you can make a report on the Wisconsin DOT’s website.
