An aircraft that lost power while flying over the Township of Addison in Washington County made a safe landing after declaring an emergency, with no injuries as a result.
The 67-year-old pilot from Milwaukee and his adult passenger were flying in a 1941 Aeronca Super Chief on Saturday afternoon when it lost power while flying between Oshkosh and Guntly Memorial Airport in Racine County.
The pilot was able to glide the aircraft into a field just west of Big Cedar Lake, but while rolling through the field he noticed an approaching embankment. In order to avoid going over that embankment a sharp turn was needed, causing damage to the cloth-covered left wing as it contacted the ground. Because of the damage the National Transportation Safety Board classified the incident as a substantial-damage aircraft accident. The plane was scheduled to be removed yesterday.
