(Note – a line-reading error resulted in an error regarding the Plymouth spending referendum; it was, in fact, defeated. We regret the error.)
If the rest of the state had voted as Sheboygan County did on Tuesday, Wisconsin would be a mostly-solid “red state” this morning, but as a state Wisconsin results aren’t quite that simple.
As it turns out, David Crowley is the new Governor, with the Democrat winning 54.1% of the vote versus 45.9% for Republican Tom Tiffany. The State Senate has an 18-15 Democrat majority and in the Assembly it’s 53-46 in favor of Democrats. Democrat Josh Kaul retains his Attorney General position, Democrat Yee Leng Xiong is the new State Treasurer and Democrat JoCasta Zamarripa is the Secretary of State. Wisconsin voted to limit the Governor’s partial veto power to create or increase any tax or fee, places of worship may still be ordered to obey restrictions during a public health emergency, and preferential treatment by race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin cannot be given by Wisconsin in public employment, contracting, education or administration.
As Sheboygan County voted, results are quite different. Tom Tiffany was favored over David Crowley, Eric Toney out-polled Josh Kaul, Jay Schroeder was preferred over winner JoCasta Zamarripa in the Secretary of State race, and John S. Leiber won Sheboygan County for State Treasurer, all in opposition to the eventual State election results. Sheboygan County voters also voted “Yes” on all three State Referendum questions.
As for regional races, Republican Glenn Grothman defeated a challenge from Democrat Brad Smith to retain his US Congress District-6 seat. Amy Binsfeld won the race for State Senate District 9 over Independent Christian Ellis to take the seat of retiring Senator Devin LeMahieu of Oostburg, maintaining Republican control over that position.
In Assembly races, Joe Sheehan survived a challenge by Republican John Belanger among Sheboygan County voters by a comfortable margin in the 26th District. Republican Paul Tittl held onto his seat by defeating Christopher Able in the 25th District. 59th Assembly District voters chose Republican Bradley Petersen over Democrat Jack Holzman.
City of Plymouth voters id not approve their levy increase referendum which would have enabled that city’s Police Department to expand, but Sheboygan Falls’ referendum to improve their school facilities also was approved.
