The expert speaker slated to address the City of Sheboygan on data center issues cancelled out on Monday, but tomorrow’s meeting will still be held. From 6-7 PM Wednesday at Uptown Social there will be a review of the previous three speakers and a question-and-answer session.
In previous sessions the meetings included the President of Alliant Energy, Becky Valcq, who told attendees that while there are tangible benefits to data centers, challenges to the grid are inevitable.
Dr. Ben Green, co-author of “What Happens When Data Centers Come to Town” gave an overview during the second session of local impacts on economies of energy and resources, and how local governments need to craft careful zoning laws to manage those impacts.
The Senior Policy Coordinator for the Great Plains Institute, Bridget Williams, was the speaker at last Wednesday’s session and warned that while some data centers use only as much electricity as a hotel, the largest can use almost 3 times the capacity of the entire Point Beach Nuclear Plant.
Those and other discoveries will be used to eventually craft zoning laws to regulate data centers should one ever want to locate in Sheboygan.
